Get out of the house, we need to build a mall here

I am presuming that by the time I write this there would have been atleast few tens of homes in the United States that might have been brought down by this new law . The law basically states that "The City may take your property through eminent domain to make way for a hotel and convention center if it promises to bring more revenue to the city and th houseowner is compensated at his market value."

I am not sure about how you feel about this but to me it sucks. Imagine a middle class couple who could have saved upto the last penny to build their dream home and the city walks and says "Ok, Mom and Pop, please leave. We are going to build a mall here". I think it would be a big blow to them.

Giving them permission to build a home and then asking them to leave is cruel. reminds me of the closing lines in a very famous song - "You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave"

hey that seriously stinks.... this is so totally bad.. but how come has there not been any sorta protest against it yet??

but you say the landowner will be payed.. will it be a single payment for the land area based on size or will he be payed on the hotels income possibility or profit on a monthly basis.. though the 2nd sounds dumb ther is a possibility..

I'm sure the courts will stand by the people on this issue. but this is absolutely ridiculous.
nalla velai, I don't own a property ;)

Yeah it is bad. The law always had a clause for "eminent domain" - which is asking someone to vacate for building a highway or something like that but Supereme Court has opened new can of worms with asking people to clear up for building mallas, hotels etc.

The land owner will be compensated at the market value for his house

Saranyan
It was the courts who ruled against the people. So, they really did not stand for the people. Yeah, small mercies thet we don't have a property.

Yeah, I heard about this in NPR the other day, and people were talking in the same lines.!

I feel the same ways as you do.!
